Vancouverluft II.  Awesomeator. New word. The entity that is continuously awesome. The awesomeator. Noun. Something awesome that has become an entity unto itself.  It’s back. The beautiful Vancouver wind. The benevolent, blustery, beneficent breeze, blissfully blowing at us the kind, air-born comments of something that is beautiful, and that we can’t control.

We’re living it and that takes up a lot of time but occasionally we emerge from our burrows amidst all our cares and notice the beauty.

IMAG1146And then the smoke came. Like some foreign planet.  Get out.  “Looks like Mars,” I was saying across the courtyard here on level 3 scant minutes ago.  Then our neighbour seemed to go down and I don’t know what got him.  I hope it wasn’t the smoke.

9:23 pm. We’re in downtown Fairview here and the home fires are burning strong. It’s interesting. The novelty is going strong.  If it’s like this a week from now all the smoking you haven’t done will have been negated.  And that includes tobacco, cigarettes, cigars, marijuana, hashish, beedies,  blow, oxy, junk, crack, everything. It’s gather round the campfire, kids. Let’s have a weenie roast followed by every dear child’s favourite. Marshmallows.

Let’s make it happen.  Burn down the Mission.  Light my fire.  Fire, you’re gonna burn. Burning ring of fire. Firing on all eight cylinders. You’re fired. Fire down below. Fire on the moon. All fired up. Fire if fired upon. Where there’s smoke there’s fire.  Fire away.DSCN0126July 6.  Afternoon.  The smoke’s died down but how do we get the lingering effects out of our hallway?  Put a fan out there and blow it away.

Canadian Museum of Flight

It’s a good idea. Get all the pieces together in one place so you can see what you’ve got and hopefully make some sense out of it. And it’s all volunteer. Museum of Flight

It’s out there at what we used to call “Skyways” in Langley, BC. These days the dully utilitarian handle “Langley Airport” has been substituted.

But it’ll always be “Skyways” in our hearts, and in our heads. “Skyway Air Services Limited” was the official name.  Learn to fly the Skyways way. Sure.

Way up there somewhere.  We toured the retired hangar which is fairly stuffed with a few full sized planes, large-scale models hanging from the rafters, and many professionally done archival displays. Impressive, I believe, would not be an exaggeration.

Outside in the open air are half a dozen or so complete airplanes of various eras in “static” display, including an Avro CF-100 and a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.

I remember the Starfighter.  They called it the “widowmaker”. Take offs weren’t so bad. A lot of the difficulties seemed to involve getting the plane back on the ground.  It was a high-speed dart that took a lot of experience to handle, and maybe a “I double-dog dare you to fly this plane” to get the pilot motivated. There were a lot of crashes.

This one was in one piece though, and my co-pilot sat in the cockpit but didn’t take the Starfighter for a spin.  Darn. No engine.

Lovely flight.  Bit of turbulence over New Haven but indeed splendid, splendid time, and so pleased to be back with you all and enjoying this fabulous sunshine.

Drive-In Movie

I dug some stuff out of the history books again. There’s more Drive-in Theatres still around than I thought. There’s still 3 in the province of British Columbia. And then I remembered I worked at one.

And then the movie started. The “Twi-Night Feature”. That’s the first movie preceding the main feature. And depending on how bright and light it still is, that first feature starts and it can still be pretty light out.

Cirrus

You’re sitting in your car.  You’re either driving it or years earlier a child sitting on the bench seat between your mother and your mother’s girlfriend. Either way, it just works. It’s “Annie Hall”.  It’s a bit faint up there to start but as it gets darker and darker the picture’s up there and it’s getting brighter and brighter.

The speaker thing is hanging on your half-open window and everything is coming through fine. Then they got rid of the speakers.

“Revenge of The Nerds” is a great movie.  I remember that one from the “Hillcrest Drive-In”. I was working the box office and I needed to get to Coquitlam. I still feel bad about it but I grifted about 20 dollaroes from the take.  The guilt is still there.  It’s tough.

Crazy
Crazy

A crazy idea that almost worked. That’s what this is about, right? You load up and head to the drive-in.  I was shocked, disturbed and deeply concerned and fascinated to learn that there’s still one out there.  You know.  Out there.  Out there.  In Aldergrove.  In where?

I’ve been there and it’s not the way I remember it.  Nothing used to be in Aldergrove, which was kind of unique. Things have changed.

The “Twilight Feature” it’s also called. Or used to be called. And still is.  And the concept still gets me.  You’re sitting in your car. If it’s the drive-in you’re usually in a group. Bring the whole family.  It’ll be all right.  It’ll be dark.

DSCN0118 They tore down the old drive-in because most of the people who worked there are dead. Market housing.

It’s not a bad reason but the Drive-In goes on, obviously. You can’t kill it.

Thank you for watching and thank you again for your kind consideration.

Happy and thriving like a wet puppy Canada Day to you.
